Recently, Benedikt Schulz appeared as a guest speaker at a university day for “Modern upgrades and lightweight construction”. His query as to what exactly constitutes lightweight construction caused a great deal of consternation for the organisers. Harmony was restored when those gathered agreed that lightweight construction includes everything that is not massive. A similar situation occurred when the editors at DBZ asked Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz to be guest editors for their issue on “Massive Construction”. The editors and the brothers all agreed that massive construction could be the opposite of lightweight construction, timber construction and architecture consisting of cardboard or plastic.
As guest editors, they were given the task of defining the neither standardised nor protected term and to search for pioneering projects of massive construction. The result is a magazine issue with several international examples of massive construction. In the end, one thing became clear: Massive construction is not lightweight construction. To say the opposite would be massive nonsense.
