Benedikt studied at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (Rheinisch-Westphalian Technical University of Aachen) and the Universidad Católica de Asunción in Paraguay. In 1992, he co-founded the office Schulz und Schulz with his brother Ansgar. He is a member of the Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten and led its working group for young architects.
Benedikt is also a member of FC Schalke 04, the Deutscher Werkbund Berlin, and the scientific advisory board of the Deutsches Institut für Stadtbaukunst. He was appointed to the Class of Baukunst (architectural art) of the Sächsische Akademie der Künste and serves on the design advisory board of the city of Heidelberg. After teaching roles at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, he chaired the Department of Building Construction as a professor at the Technische Universität Dortmund. He also worked as a guest professor at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina. Currently, he teaches and conducts research as a professor of Design and Construction at the Technische Universität Dresden.
Benedikt has received numerous awards for the architectural works he created with Ansgar, including the European Balthasar-Neumann Prize, the International Prize for Sacred Architecture, and several awards from the Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten. The Leipzig Propsteikirche St. Trinitatis, designed by them, was named “Religious Building of the Year” at the 2016 World Architecture Festival. In recognition of their architectural body of work and contributions to architectural culture, they received the Großer DAI Prize for Baukultur in 2018.
Benedikt frequently co-authors publications with Ansgar in professional journals and books. Some of their notable works include the specialist books “Perfect Scale” and “Naturstein Atlas.” Benedikt regularly serves as a jury member for architectural competitions, planning assessments, and architecture awards. He is often invited to give guest critiques and lectures at colleges, universities, and conferences. He is also appointed to design advisory boards as an external expert, providing guidance on urban design and cityscape-related matters.
