Ready for building – depth through structural design
Spectacular in design, but never built – rejected by the client or competition failures, now slumbering in the filing cabinet, on the hard drive or in the archives of architecture. Such designs, created by legends of architectural history and renowned colleagues, were of particular interest to Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz during their time as Co-Chairs of Structural Design at TU Dortmund. Together with their students, they posed the question: How would these designs look if they were made “ready for building”, that is, if they were developed to a point where they could actually be built.
The publication of the same name demonstrates how the few existing design elements are structured, how supporting structures are developed, how the individual components are joined together in a coherent construct, and how important details of the building design are developed. The students realised that even for a spectacular concept, no matter how visionary, there is always a way to implement it by designing it well. The best works are compiled in the book.
