The present publication is a comprehensive compendium of building construction theory presented by professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz during their tenure as co-chairs of the Building Construction faculty at the Technical University of Dortmund from 2010 and 2012. Within the Dortmund model of civil engineering, building construction is of central importance. While the “Foundations and Theory of Building Construction” are led in the first and second semesters by chair Paul Kahlfeldt, the task of the “Building Construction” chair is to introduce increasing complex design and construction theory in the fourth and fifth semesters.
The teaching concept corresponds to an understanding of building construction as represented by the works of Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz. Their concept conveys building construction as an essential tool for implementing architectural ideas and concepts. In doing so, Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz do not forego an architectural approach, but instead measure the constructive implementation by its conclusiveness in relation to the architectural position represented.
