The main theme of issue 05/2015 “Beständigkeit der Schönheit, Überlegungen zur Haltbarkeit architektonischer Ästhetik“ rests on an idea proposed by Benedikt Schulz, who had invited various guests to a symposium at the studio of Schulz und Schulz on Lake Zwenkau near Leipzig to mark his retirement from the Working Group of Young Architects of the BDA. The lectures and discussions focussed on aesthetic categories and standards as well as their permanence and change. The event continued through a series of walks led by Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz with Louisa Hutton, Fuensanta Nieto, Andreas Denk and David Kasparek to discuss, on a relatively abstract level, the aspects of beauty in architecture and the necessity and changeability of expressing the idea of beauty in their architectural reflections. Ultimately, it becomes clear that a lasting dimension of architecture results from its “beauty”, which places the work above the constant change of knowledge and convention, and thus endures through time.
